Product Ascension, or Upselling is a sales technique whereby a seller induces the customer to purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add-ons in an attempt to make a more profitable sale.
Product Ascension usually involves marketing more profitable services or products but can be simply exposing the customer to other options that were perhaps not considered.
Probably the best know product ascension, or upselling, is McDonalds sales technique of asking “would you like Fries with that?” Its simple, compliments the original purchase decision, and works. McDonalds earns 18 cents on a $2.09 Burger sale, and $1.14 extra profit on a Fries and Coke upsell! The upsell profit is 7 times the Core product profit.
